Clinical Club No 5. How safe is your bandage?

8/4/2025

Georgie Hollis describes the science associated with sub bandage pressures and discusses the factors that can influence the damage caused. This session explains the principles of a standard bandage, the layers involved. Robert Jones and the modified Robert Jones are discussed and compared to casting and splinting as our preferred method for immobilisation.

A section covering Q&A is included where questions raised during the live session are answered.
These include:
  • Should you use cotton wool or orthopaedic under padding between toes?
  • Is an open toe bandage better than a closed toe and when would you use each?
  • Should orthopaedic under padding be rolled up and down the limb, or cut at the top and started at the foot for each layer?
NB: Current UK OSCE standards are to bandage up the limb with orthopaedic underpadding, cut at the top and start again at the foot for another layer.  Our view on this is explained during the session. Students - please be aware if you are studying for exams you should follow the practice recommended by your tutors.

If you feel your practice could benefit from a review of your bandaging techniques we are happy to discuss your needs and adapt our training to suit you. contact us:
