Clinical Club - Bonus session - 7pm (GMT) 4th December. Securing your IV lines - Stick or Twist?

11/18/2025

We need your input for this one. A question we've had a few times and would like to find out what matters to you. What do you do with your IV lines to avoid complications? What works for you? What could work better?

Picture

The question we have had that we would like to explore.....
  • Preparing for IV placement - clipping and skin prep for reducing complications
  • Which tape to use?
  • How do you avoid legs swelling?
  • To bandage the full limb or not in cats?
  • Toes out or open toes?
Help us unpick this one live.... If you're not already registered click on the button below we'll share a code for mentimeter so that you can interact live and tell us what works for you!

Thank you to Millpledge for your continued support for what we do. In this session we will also discuss adhesive removers and what works for you and why you use them.
We'll also be launching a survey where you can win one of 3 vet nurse pouches full of goodies thanks to Millpledge. Just so you know.... everything we do is to better understand what works and how to improve what you do. Regardless of commercial support, but we do have a soft spot for Meryl! 😉

Our October clinical club focuses on the value of skin care and wound lavage as part of the wound management process. Watch the recording below and don't forget to zap the QR code on the right to download your CPD certificate.

This session covers care of surrounding skin, lavage and cleansing as part of the wound management process. Crusting of exudate, accumulation of debris and dead tissue not only contributes to continued inflammation but can also be uncomfortable inviting patient interference and difficulty in removal in the conscious patient.
In this session we'll also cover a novel technique using 'bubble-wrap' as a way to rapidly remove devitalised tissue in the compromised patient. A simple measure that can make a considerable impact on the welfare of the patient, early decision making and the positive progression of wound healing.
We will cover:
  • Use of shampoo and skin cleansers as a method to reduce bioburden surrounding wounds to reduce associated inflammation and optimise skin health.
  • Wound lavage and autolytic debridement to reduce bioburden
  • Simple methods that can help on a budget and the introduction of novel techniques to assist in rapid debridement of large areas of superficial, devitalised tissue.

12 Factors of Healing Delay Worksheet.  1 page.
This worksheet can be used to help identify factors that may delay healing as wound healing progresses. It can be used from first presentation to assist in planning and pre-empting complications as well as a troubleshooting list for when things aren't going to plan.

Clinical Club No 5. How safe is your bandage?

8/4/2025

Georgie Hollis describes the science associated with sub bandage pressures and discusses the factors that can influence the damage caused. This session explains the principles of a standard bandage, the layers involved. Robert Jones and the modified Robert Jones are discussed and compared to casting and splinting as our preferred method for immobilisation.

A section covering Q&A is included where questions raised during the live session are answered.
These include:
  • Should you use cotton wool or orthopaedic under padding between toes?
  • Is an open toe bandage better than a closed toe and when would you use each?
  • Should orthopaedic under padding be rolled up and down the limb, or cut at the top and started at the foot for each layer?
NB: Current UK OSCE standards are to bandage up the limb with orthopaedic underpadding, cut at the top and start again at the foot for another layer.  Our view on this is explained during the session. Students - please be aware if you are studying for exams you should follow the practice recommended by your tutors.

If you feel your practice could benefit from a review of your bandaging techniques we are happy to discuss your needs and adapt our training to suit you. contact us:
